Why is My Air Conditioner Frozen?

Noticeable Problem: ice build up on HVAC Unit

Having ice on your HVAC unit signals to you that something is wrong. When you see it, there are a few things that you need to do and consider.

Why is my air conditioner frozen?

Possible Problems:

There are several different problems that can cause ice to form on an HVAC unit. The majority of these issues need to be taken care of by a licensed HVAC contractor, but there are a few that you may be able to check and correct yourself.

1. Check the Quality of the Air Filter – If your air filter is clogged or extremely dirty, it’s best to change it immediately. Check the outside unit the following day to see if the ice has dissipated. For more information, check out our blog post on When to Change Your Air Filter.

2. Dirty Coils – Coils on your HVAC Unit will get dirty and dusty over time. Outside units are exposed to the seasons and need to be properly maintained. If your HVAC unit’s coils are clogged, the unit will not run efficiently and cause the unit to form ice. Signing up for our Energy Savings Agreement (ESA) will ensure that your coils are cleaned every year so you do not run into this issue.

3. Faulty Motor – When a motor goes out on your HVAC unit it can cause the unit to freeze. If this is the case for you, one of our qualified service technicians can diagnose your issue and get the proper motor replaced. We will get you back to being comfortable in no time.

4. Leak in your Refrigerant Line – Inside your unit you have refrigerant lines that can spring leaks. When the unit has a leak it tries to work harder and harder to keep up with the temperature you have selected. If the refrigerant is not at the proper level, the unit is not running efficiently. When the unit is having to work even harder, it causes the unit to freeze up. Having a leak fix is a easy process and our technicians have all of the knowledge and tools to get yours taken care of immediately.

If you are having freezing issues with your unit, call us and we can schedule for someone to come out and get your unit running properly.

What to Do if Your HVAC is Frozen

As soon as you notice your unit with ice on it, cut your cooling off and turn your fan to the on position. Doing this will help your unit thaw quicker. If a technician comes out and your unit is a block of ice, they won’t be able to diagnose until the unit is thawed.
