A Brief History of Modern Air Conditioning

Home » Helpful HVAC & Plumbing Blog » A Brief History of Modern Air Conditioning

September 10, 2015 by Kathy Dumas

Who Created the first Air Conditioner?

Air conditioning was originally invented by a Chinese inventor, Ding Huan. Huan created a hand powered rotary fan for air conditioning in the 2nd century. Ever since Ding Huan invented the first primitive Air Conditioner, many inventors began improving the concept.

What is Air Conditioning?

These are all terms that we use in the Air Conditioning industry:

  • A/C
  • HVAC
  • AC
  • Air Conditioning
  • Cooling

Simply put, Air Conditioning is the process of altering the properties of air (primarily temperature and humidity) to more comfortable conditions.

A Brief History of Air Conditioning

What does HVAC Mean?

HVAC stands for Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning. Sometimes you will see it as HVAC-R. The addition of the “R” includes Refrigeration, like coolers and food refrigeration systems.

Air conditioning has become a want, or need, in just about every home across the United States. Whether you have a window unit, wall unit, heat pump or package unit- your air is being generated to a certain condition and expelled through a vent. Every homeowner in Nashville knows how uncomfortable southern summers can be and the importance of maintaining an efficient Air Conditioning system.

The Modern Air Conditioner

Modern Air Conditioning was created in 1902 by Willis Carrier. Carrier was a Cornell graduated and used his employment at Forge Company to experiment with different ideas. He had to resolve an issue with a company’s printing machine during the ink application process. The issue was humidity.

Carrier continued experimenting until he found a solution to remove humidity from the air. Carrier had coincidentally invented the modern air conditioning. His solution for Sackett-Wilhelms’ printing-issue controlled temperature and humidity and improved the productivity of the printing machine.

How did Willis Carrier do it?

Carrier knew how to heat objects. He simply took what he knew about heating objects and reversed it. Pretty smart, right? It took a lot of hard work; moreover, because of great demand- The Carrier Air Conditioning Company of America was formed. By the 1950s, the residential market wanted an air conditioner in every home.

Air Conditioning is in 99% of southern homes. Can you imagine life without it?
