Get the Most out of your Programmable Thermostat
Programmable Thermostats are an excellent way to save energy and keep money in your pocket. But it’s not all about just purchasing one.
Types of Programmable Thermostats
NEST
First, You can buy so many different brands and styles. NEST has been trying to break through the market as the newest technology. We don’t recommend them, but we do have customers that the thermostat works for.
Me for example, the NEST wouldn’t work for me. I don’t have a set schedule. I’m not ever home at a certain time everyday… So I’ve stayed away from the NEST. But, if you have a pretty set schedule, it could work for you.
The NEST thermostat programs itself by you choosing temperatures throughout your first week or so. Afterwards, it learns your habits and conforms to your style.
Like I said above, it wouldn’t really work all that great for me. And it seems like a lot of remembering at first.
Lyric
Honeywell makes all kinds of great thermostats. They even have their own version of the NEST, Called the Lyric. We definitely recommend Honeywell and put them on all units that we install.
You can purchase all kinds of different kinds of programmable thermostats. You can see them at hardware stores and practically everywhere else.
How Programmable Thermostats Work
Programmable thermostats work by programming temperatures into the built in calendar.
You start by choosing temperatures of comfort throughout your day.
What You Can Do to Optimize Your Programmable Thermostat
Example Set-Up:
Monday-Friday: If you have a set schedule, program your thermostat to save Energy while you are at work. My thermostat goes down to 63 While I’m at work in the Winter. That way my apartment doesn’t get colder than 63. In the Spring Summer, I don’t let me apartment get warmer than 78. I just adjust the Cool/Heat settings to kick on to my comfort temperature about 30 minutes before I get home.
At Night: I do the same thing as during the week, but not as extreme. I like sleeping with it a little cooler, so I let my heat get down to 68 and when I’m awake I keep it on 71-72. During the Summer I keep my air on 72, at night I let it get up to 74, but no higher.
Weekends: I set my night temperatures to adjust around 10. If I am up later, or I leave the house… I just adjust the temperature accordingly and hit the hold button. This will override my settings until I take the hold off.
Just taking a few extra minutes out of one day and programming your Thermostat can save you money and save energy.
